King’s College London have taken the place as the first university to start their very own Rap Society, or RapSoc.

Nickil Dhokia (‘N.KiLL’), Suganthan Mahalingham (‘Sugz’) and Zayd Mehdi (‘Grayd’) who created the group told us they aim to “create a community of students who share the similar passion of writing and performing rap music. We want to discover and promote talented KCL students who may have not had the opportunity to showcase their ability. Hopefully through the society we can try to negate the stigma associated with rap culture.”

The group runs through fortnightly freestyle rap sessions where students are welcomed to perform in a non-judgemental environment. The society also hosts free workshops where members can share and learn new lyric writing techniques. They hope to inspire other uni’s to start similar societies, to be followed with uni vs. uni clashes and battles.

Nickil went on, “We started the society because we think the UK rap and grime scene is underrepresented at our uni, and this Rap Society will unify all aspects of the culture, in terms of composition, competition and community. I’m bare on it.”

Grisha Kippa, a member of the society told us, “I’m pleased they started it because it seems there isn’t many areas of King’s College where you can express such a form of art and music consistently. I believe an official Rap Society where we promote such music can help change that and help teach people of the varieties of the art.”
